About Julia
Julia is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, completing a MA in Cello Performance, with Prof. Jo Cole. Her previous studies were given generous support from the First Initiative Foundation Scholarships, Wong Wai Ming Memorial Scholarships, and Mr. & Mrs. Y S Liu Scholarships. She was awarded a BMus with first-class honours from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA).
Biography
Cellist Julia Ng is an experienced orchestral player, having worked with well-known conductors including Eitan Globerson, Hsu Wei-En, and Trevor Pinnock. She has performed with the Ponte Orchestra of Hong Kong since 2018 and recent performances include playing the solo continuo in Mozart’s Idomeneo. She has also recently performed with the Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra, in ‘Disney in Concert’. Most recently, she collaborated with famous Hong Kong pop singer, Hins Cheung, in a string orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Julia has also performed in numerous different operas.
As an Asian musician, Julia has actively sought opportunities to present and combine the distinguishing features of Chinese and Western musics. Recently, she was invited to join the of the Hong Kong String Orchestra for a central European tour, performing representative work from Hong Kong and more widely in Athens, Naoussa, Sofia, Belgrade, and Bucharest. During this tour, she also cooperated with two famous violinists, Jue Yao and Mario Hossen.
As a soloist, Julia was the champion of the 63rd and 66th Hong Kong School Music Festival (HKSMF) cello competitions. In 2022, was selected to become one of the soloists, performing Bach for the HKAPA School of Dance Project, ‘"The Acceptance of Being" - Dance/Connect’. Julia has performed in masterclasses for Prof. Chu-Yibing, Richard Bamping, and Prof. Troels Svane.
Julia is also an accomplished chamber musician who has won multiple awards. She received the Champion and Outstanding Performance Prize in the quartet and duet categories at the 1st International Cello Competition of the Beijing 6th Ai Qi Prize competition. Additionally, she was highly recommended for the Royal Academy of Music’s Historical Women Composers Prize for her Oboe Trio last year and placed second in the Chamber Music section of the Hong Kong Generation Next Arts (HKGNA) Music Competition in 2022. Julia has participated in masterclasses with renowned quartets such as the Shanghai Quartet and the Orion String Quartet.
